Health & Nutrition Programme Officer, Hajjah District, Yemen 

Location: This position is based in Hajjah, with ad hoc travel to Al-Hudaydah and Sana’a, Yemen.

Overall Purpose:  Working as an important member of a diverse team who are committed to serve the most vulnerable with practical and compassionate care, the Health and Nutrition Officer will work closely with the ZOA Health and Nutrition Program Manager (H&N) and provide support on direct implementation and coordination of the designated field projects. The Health and Nutrition Officer will play a key role in ensuring ZOA programmes meet set quality standards as well as following national and international guidelines by the following; assist with the roll out of ZOA health and nutrition activities, provide daily supervision and on job training of health and nutrition staff, support with reporting and evaluation, coordinate and collaborate with other stakeholders and agencies as needed.

Project Overview: This position is part of a new project. In response to the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Yemen ZOA will establish integrated multi-sectorial programing focussed on delivering life-saving essential basic services to IDP and vulnerable communities in Hajjah Governorate.  ZOA projects include establishing WASH, Food Security, CMAM (Community Management of Acute Malnutrition) programme, and potential outbreak response and Primary Health Care programming.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support the Health and Nutrition Programme Manager with the roll out of the new health and nutrition programming, including planning of proposed and monitoring of the health and nutrition activities and identifying suitable health and nutrition staff   
  • Establish and support a functioning referral system to between community and facility levels both internally and with other service provides
  • Oversee active case finding in the targeted communities, including training of volunteers on danger signs and referral; training on MUAC (Mid Upper Arm Circumference) screening and referral for children under 5 and pregnant and lactating women (PLW). 
  • Coordinate with ZOA WASH team and partners on health and IYCF (infant and young child feeding practices) messages in line with national guidelines to be relayed in targeted areas through community volunteers, and through support groups at service sites
  • Adhere to national CMAM treatment and health service guidelines, and be committed to meet set minimum quality standards.
  • In collaboration with relevant stakeholders and ZOA logistics officer ensure that sufficient supplies are available at targeted clinics


  • Assist the Health and Nutrition Project Manager in developing a plan for training of health and nutrition staff.
  • Conduct job training ensuring services is provided in line with CMAM, IYCF, IMCI, ANC, PNC and outbreak disease guidelines.
  • Provide in collaboration with DHO and GHO refresher training for Community Health Volunteers in line with national guidelines

Supervision and Management

  • Provide technical support and daily/ frequent clinical supervision of all aspects of CMAM and potential future PHC (IMCI, RH) programme activities
  • Provide direct line management of health and nutrition staff and team leaders including theoretical and on the job training, close supervision, and performance management.
  • Ensure that proper assessment, classification and referral are done of patients presenting with danger signs and symptoms of outbreak diseases, in line with national case definitions.
  • Ensure that MUAC screening and referral is done correctly by community volunteers.
  • Ensure that correct records are maintained at services sites.
  • Collect data and compile weekly and monthly report as required.

External coordination:   

  • Develop effective and professional relationships with relevant officials and departments
  • Promote the programme within communities, integrating with relevant community leaders and decision makers
  • With the input from ZOA Health and Nutrition Programme manager represent ZOA and coordinate with other stakeholders (e.g. DHO and GHO), agencies and sub clusters
  • Participate in relevant working groups

Other Responsibilities

  • Assist in carrying out assessments/surveys baseline household surveys when needed.
  • Ensure that gender and protection are mainstreamed in the programme
  • Provide input into planning for future projects,  proposals and report writing






Vocational qualification

M.B.B.S  Bachelor degree of Medicine and Surgery

Degree in community health/ nutrition/ public health.

Work experience

5 years of relevant work experience

1 year experience with NGO’s


Experience with CMAM, IYCF, IMCI and RH programming.


Fluency in spoken and written English; Arabic native speaker



Good working skills with Word, Excel, and use of Outlook for e-mail
